  • like all clays, kaolin is basically a hydrated aluminum silicate, plastic when wet and permanently hard when fired. “Clay” refers to a physical condition not to chemical composition. This varies with different types of clay.Huge mechanical shovels, drag lines, tractors and graders ship the overburden of earth from the clay, then take out the crude clay itself for removal to the processing plant. There it is dumped directly or carried by conveyor into dry storage sheds. According to the moisture content, it may feel almost dry to the touch, soapy, or slick as mud. The clay now called kaolin was discovered in China more than 30 centuries ago and added luster to the fine porcelain china of ancient times. There are conflicting stories of how it got its present name.

  • The word "calcining" refers to treatment of a mineral product at a very high temperature such as 800 to 1000 degrees centigrade. The word is derived from the process of converting calcium carbonate to calcium oxide. This reaction plays a key role both in the production of precipitated calcium carbonate filler and in the chemical recovery cycle of kraft pulping.

When the term calcination is used together with the word "clay," there is no calcium involved. Rather, the word "calcination" is used only because similar equipment, as used for calcium carbonate, can also be used to prepare anhydrous clay. Intense heating of kaolin clay drives off water of hydration and yields a bright, anhydrous clay product in which individual platelets of the mineral are fused together. Calcined clay is widely used in coating due to its bulking nature and brightness. Calcined clay also is abrasive. With regard to filler addition at the wet end of the paper machine, over the last 20 years economics have favored the shift from calcined clay and other clay products to calcium carbonate products.

  • High alumina calcine clay Calcined alumina clay is generally used in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic shapes, refractories and fused alumina abrasives. It can be compressed to produce a fired density of 3.8 or more. Amazingly, ceramic bodies containing 95% or more alumina are being employed to produce ceramic parts for a wide range industries (fired to 1400C or more).

Fabrication methods and glazing vary according to application. Alumina has a very high melting temperature (about 2000C) and alumina ceramics can maintain up to 90% of their strength above 1100C. They are thus employed in many refractory materials (i.e. Calcium Aluminate Cements have PCEs above cone 35) and used to make parts that must withstand high temperature.

  • THE term "high-alumina clays" has been applied to various clays (rocks) that contain Al2O3 in excess of certain minimum amounts--the minimum commonly has been set by the use to which the high-alumina clay was put, as for refractories, abrasives, aluminium metal extraction, or other purposes.
